Chasing Complexity: My Path to BizOps  and Why I Landed at Valon

By Caitlyn Liu

I’ve always gravitated toward roles where the problems are messy and the solutions require both creativity and rigor. That’s what led me from investment banking to consumer tech, and eventually to Valon.

At its core, mortgage servicing is deeply complex—layered with regulation, legacy infrastructure, and consumer frustration. I was drawn to the challenge of untangling that complexity and building something better. Valon stood out for taking a long-term, product-led approach to transformation—investing in deep industry expertise while staying agile and experimental in how we build.

My Path to BizOps

I started my career in  investment banking, where I learned how to think fast, communicate clearly, and analyze data under pressure. Later, I joined the brand incubation team at a consumer tech company. There, I had my first taste of true product and operational work—managing test launches, analyzing user feedback, and iterating quickly based on results.

Having studied Computer Science, I was excited to pair that technical foundation with the strategic problem-solving I’d developed earlier in my career. That’s what made Valon’s BizOps team such a compelling fit. Unlike BizOps at many companies, our team partners closely with Engineering, Product and Data from day one—prototyping internal tools, mapping workflows, and defining clear business requirements and driving their implementation.

What Makes Valon Different

  • Adapt to win, not to settle: There’s no “we’ve always done it this way” mentality here. We question assumptions, test ideas, and build what works—even if it means rethinking the status quo.
  • Low ego, high trust: Good ideas can come from anywhere, and at Valon, they often do. Even as a newer team member, I’ve been empowered to drive decisions that shape the way our teams work and the tools we use.
  • Mission-aligned product thinking: The work we do directly improves the experience of homeowners. That connection between what we build and who it helps is incredibly motivating.

We’re at a pivotal moment—growing fast, investing in AI and automation, and building the infrastructure to scale. There’s an enormous opportunity to rethink how this industry operates, and we need curious, analytical minds to help shape that future.

If you’re someone who gets energy from solving hard problems, collaborating cross-functionally, and building products that make a difference you’ll thrive here.
